I just don't get it...
Each morning, as part of my daily ritual, I turn on my TV for a moment. Not to watch it, but to change the channel so I can tape the morning replays of the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. I don't have Tivo, and I watch too much TV, so my prime-time taping schedule is complicated and elaborate, and requires me to catch those replays during the day.
Not the point.
Anyway. When I turn on Comedy Central each morning, the same informercial is on. It's for the latest DVD in the "Girls Gone Wild" series.
Here is my question: who buys these things? If you're gonna buy something like this, why not just buy some real porn? Why buy this lame soft-core crap? What's the appeal? Why not get the real thing?
And who's watching this infomercial at 4:30 in the morning? On weekdays??

this was the biggest laugh, no... it was the ONLY laugh i got all day yesterday!! and now I'M truly wondering why this is...
I bet Dads who have let their daughters go away on spring break, are the ones buying these videos....making sure THEIR daughter hasn't ended up on one!! I'm telling ya, it's every parent's nightmare! (Which is why MY daughter did NOT get to go to Cancun for spring break :) I'm so mean!
Maybe it's for all the people who only do it missionary in the dark. Anything els would just be too wild. LOL.
re, you know i love it when people laugh at the stupid stuff i say.
chelle, i hadn't thought of that!! eek, i can't imagine parenting a teen. i just can't.
suze...THAT's funny.
I keep waiting for someone to get me that series as a present ... who doesn't like seeing strange, hot chicks getting nekkid? LOL
LOL... I was gonna post a comment that said "my money's on Dzer" in response to your question... but I see he's beat me to the punch!
i used to watch tv that much... then i cut off my cable and then i saw what i really missed and now i have basic and 6 shows only.
it's much nicer now...
jmai: I wouldn't PAY for them ... but if someone wanted to GIVE them to me ... heh
I hear ya Chelle!
Whenever I see the infomercial I always think "Well, their parents must be very proud!"
but, dz, aren't these GGW things kinda lame and weak? isn't there stuff that's more interesting?
maybe you have to be a guy to get it...
jmai, i, too, was waiting for dzer to weigh in...!
sass, you are a wise woman...but i don't think i could live without at least some cable. okay, i could... but i don't want to. there are maybe 8 or 9 shows (10?)i consider "appointment" television, but two of them (daily show and colbert report) are on four times a week... and they're on cable!
then there are the trashy shows i can't help but watch if i'm home and not busy...
madame, see what you have to look forward to when your girls get older? worrying about such things? eek.
with some hesitation i will posit a serious starting point for understanding girls gone wild (FYI - i have never watched one, and do not own any, and have only seen the commercials)
commercial porn tends to be quite plastic - artificial
many guys will tell you that they do not find commercial porn, ranging from playboy to hardcore, appealing because it is cookie cutter fake
GGW is real women
according to the BBC and CNN, "amateur" porn/erotica is the hottest growing segment of the marketplace
even commercial porn is mimicking the amateur stuff in their titles and their production and cinematic techniques (long shots from fixed points [mimicking a "home video"]) **or so i have read**
GGW is likely a reflection of that trend
excellent point, cad...
but i gotta say... this latest ad -- what little i've seen of it (and i keep watching little bits and pieces, because now i'm fascinated) -- looks very staged and the "girls" don't seem like amateurs...
it also looks very artificial to me. seems like the commercials for the older videos were a lot different.
Terry! You are one funny chick! I will have to admit that, especially during the early weeks with Buddha, I have found myself staring blank-faced at such infommercials. They're fucking mesmerizing.
bg, they ARE mesmerizing, in a really scary way...!
right
the current GWG commercial
my wife asked me the same question about that new ad/video after i answered the original GWG question for her with the same answer given above
(are you following this...?)
Girls Gone Wild is now a "name" - a marketing/brand name. A law (2257) was recently passed by the U.S. Congress which says that people producing porn have to have identification records for any of their models in order to prove that those models are of age.
Random drunk women lifting their shirts in the street are not likely to fill out age related questionaires.
So GWG had to go "in-house" to try to produce the same kind of thing while trading on their existing brand name.
hope this fills in the blanks for you ;-)

"(a) Whoever produces any book, magazine, periodical, film, videotape, or other matter which—
(1) contains one or more visual depictions made after November 1, 1990 of actual sexually explicit conduct; and
(2) is produced in whole or in part with materials which have been mailed or shipped in interstate or foreign commerce, or is shipped or transported or is intended for shipment or transportation in interstate or foreign commerce;
shall create and maintain individually identifiable records pertaining to every performer portrayed in such a visual depiction"
etc.
omigod, cadbury, i'm so happy you found the answer to my absurd, early morning query! i'm cracking up at the same time.
i believe the GGW people have been sued by several people who say they never gave permission, so i'm guessing that led to the new law.
and i'm so pleased no one pointed out how lame it is that i discerned a difference between the old GGW commercials and the new one....
I have never seen the appeal of those. ALTHOUGH... because I am a curious perv I did download one... yes, illegally. It was the worst piece of crap. I am totally with you. But those guys are making TONS of money on them... I don't get it.
I think it is the really stupid 18 year old guys that are too stupid to know how to download them for free :D
damm, this turned into a really interesting discussion. thanks for the legalese there dude that was really interesting.
and a little comforting really.
:)
terry: hmm ... hot chicks, showing off their tits ... I'm having a hard time finding anything wrong with that ... I know that sometimes when I'm walking through the mall that I wouldn't mind it if the little packs of glammy-slut-college gals suddenly "went wild" ... LOL
by the way ... there is now a "Guys Gone Wild" too ... though I think the market isn't really women ... it's men who like men who like dick ... LOL
jon, you lawbreaker you...!
yeah, sass, i had no idea this silly little post would generate so much discussion. and a legal brief from cadbury, no less!
dz, lent's almost over....;)
and yeah, i've read about the "guys" video. can't say i'm interested. my ex-husband might be, though!!
